  Alternative Dry Retention Pond Design for Enhanced Nitrogen Removal
   
  Marion County is investigating the use of a Biosorption Activated Media (BAM), developed by the University of Central Florida (UCF) and field tested in Marion County, to improve nitrogen removal in retention ponds. Building on the success of UCF’s field test, the County has constructed two full-scale pilot projects in dry retention ponds using a BAM. The pilot projects differ significantly in design in an effort to determine the best way to maximize the effectiveness of the BAM. Runoff is routed directly to the BAM placed in the retention pond bottom at the first site while at the second site runoff is first filtered through a lined aeration cell. Effectiveness monitoring on the first site is complete and will begin this year on the second site. The results of the effectiveness monitoring completed are presented and the ramifications for the construction or retrofit of dry retention ponds is discussed.
