Christine Overdevest, Assistant Professor, Sociology and Criminology & Law

Christine Overdevest received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 2005. She contributes to the fields of environmental and economic sociology, and the interdisciplinary study of governance, law, and policy. Her current research evaluates European Union’s Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) initiative, which seeks to control transnational trade in illegal timber. She is comparing the US approach to the same issue, as defined by the Lacey Act. She is also interested in the study of interactions between state and private authority, for example, the way in which FLEGT is extending the authority and influence of private forest certification schemes, such as the Forest Stewardship Council. Christine is also currently working with the University of Florida’s Water Institute on policy transitions away from the use of narrative-based standing setting for water quality to numeric standards. She teaches classes at the University of Florida in environmental and economic sociology.
