Florida Water & Climate Alliance Workshop scheduled for December 20th in Orlando, FL ,

The Florida Water and Climate Alliance (FloridaWCA), a longstanding stakeholder-scientist network coordinated by the UF Water Institute, will hold its next workshop on December 20th at Orlando Utilities Commission, including topics of sea level rise, red tide, land use, as well as social impacts and adaptations. Please contact lstaal@ufl.edu if you are interested in participating or would like additional information.

FloridaWCA grew out of Florida’s public water supply Utilities’ interest in using location-specific climate information to reduce risk and increase resilience in their operations. Established in 2010, FloridaWCA, provides a venue for shared science, interactive dialogue, and collaborative learning between Florida water management practitioners, hydrologic scientists, climate scientists, and science communications experts. Collaborators include six major public water supply utilities, three water management districts in Florida, local government representatives and several academic organizations.

Florida WCA workshops and collaborative efforts have helped shape the development and implementation of science-based climate information for operational and longer-term water resource planning and management decisions Florida. Its members hope to expand the network’s shared learning, access to resources, and potential for defining further research of specific interest to the stakeholders throughout the Southeast USA. Currently, FloridaWCA is challenging itself to explore the broader social, policy, and communication issues involved with planning and ultimate implementation of climate adaptation approaches, methods and tools. This includes branching into ecology and interfacing with ecosystem managers (US Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) to explore shared concerns to resource managers, potential science-based management actions, and land use change adaptation decisions.

Visit the FloridaWCA website for information on activities and resources. For additional information on the FloridaWCA or to register to attend the December 20th workshop, contact Lisette Staal (lstaal@ufl.edu).

Dr. Tara Wade Joins the Water Institute Faculty Advisory Committee

The UF Water Institute is pleased to welcome Dr. Tara Wade as a new member of the Faculty Advisory Committee. Dr. Wade is an agricultural resource economist in the Food and Resource Economics Department and the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center. She specializes in determining the economic factors that affect choices to adopt environmentally benign agricultural practices. Dr. Wade’s integrated extension and research program includes evaluating the costs of ecosystem services, conservation policy design, and assessing factors that affect farmers’ decisions to adopt agriculturally benign practices that often affect water quality.

“I believe that water connects all of us and we can begin to resolve water quality and quantity issues through interdisciplinary approaches. The Water Institute provides invaluable opportunities to collaborate with others and serving on the FAC allows me to play a small role in this process. As a junior faculty member I can also take advantage of opportunities to learn from various disciplines and network with faculty that would be difficult to meet otherwise.” -Dr. Tara Wade

Congratulations to the Water Institute faculty team, led by Dr. Jon Martin, who has been awarded the 2019 Water Institute Graduate Fellows (WIGF) Program!

The WIGF program supports interdisciplinary teams of six doctoral student Fellows and their faculty advisors as they conduct research in an emerging area of water science. The 2019 WIGF cohort will focus on understanding impacts of ice retreat on high latitude hydrology, expanding the Water Institute’s portfolio of research topics and geographical focus areas into an important area of global concern.

The 2019 WIGF faculty team includes Jon Martin, John Jaeger, Ellen Martin, Elizabeth Screaton (Department of Geological Sciences), Brent Christner (Department of Microbiology and Cell Science), Matt Cohen (School of Forest Resources and Conservation), Jim Jawitz (Soil and Water Sciences Department), Stuart McDaniel (Department of Biology), Arnoldo Valle-Levinson (Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure and Environment), Cynthia Barnett (College of Journalism and Communications) and Thomas Frazer (School of Natural Resources and Environment). The cohort will integrate studies in the changing hydrology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, microbial ecology, botany, ecosystem ecology, and coastal hydrodynamics of glaciers, pro-glacial landscapes, and coastal systems in Greenland. The cohort will benefit from integrative activities to enhance interdisciplinary skills, a key component of which is developing expertise in environmental civics (i.e. leadership, public outreach, communications, and civic engagement).

The Water Institute looks forward collaborating with this team and contributing to the understanding of the Arctic's rapid biophysical changes and their consequences to the broader Earth socio-ecological system.

Announcing the 2018 Photo Contest Winners

Thank you for such wonderful participation in the UF Water Institute’s 2018 Photo Contest! We received 70 beautiful photos representing a wide variety of UF water-related research, education and outreach programs and had a very difficult time narrowing it down to five winners. All photo entries may be used on UF Water Institute’s websites, printed materials and social media accounts. A photo credit will be given whenever a photo is used for these purposes. The winners will each receive a $100 prize.

The UF Water Institute’s 2018 Photo Contest Winners are:

Trey Crouch
Environmental Engineering Sciences
“My research has focused on the effects of hydroelectric dams in the Madeira Basin on hydrology and sediment load, mostly looking at larger run-of-river dams. The green-colored reservoir in the photo was a reminder that smaller dams are also littered all over the Andes, and may play an important role in trapping sediment.”
Huyana Potosi, La Paz, Bolivia

Wendy Mussoline, Ph.D.
UF/IFAS
"Freeze protection on a blueberry farm."
Putnam County, Florida

David Kaplan, Ph.D.
Environmental Engineering Sciences
“Photo taken from the end of a transect where we are studying how freshwater flows and extreme events affect saltwater intrusion in a coastal bald cypress floodplain.”
The Suwannee River, Florida

Carlos Quintero
Soil and Water Sciences
“During the rainy season water levels rise and inundate parts of the landscape that were bone dry just a few months ago, connecting the wetlands of the preserve and allowing aquatic life to thrive.”
Big Cypress National Preserve, South Florida

Corene Matyas, Ph.D.
Geography
“I took this photo while collecting weather observations at sunrise. Cool air and the warm waters of Lake Alice combined to produce fog and the view is looking east over the UF campus.”
Lake Alice, Gainesville, Florida
