Student Poster Winners ,

The Water Institute held its 3rd student poster competition at this year’s Water Institute Symposium, and this year’s winners were Rupesh Bhomia, Stephanie Ishii, and Ignacio Rodriguez. To view all posters, visit the Symposium at a Glance page.

Bhomia is a Ph.D. student in the Soil and Water Science Department at the University of Florida, studying under Dr. Ramesh Reddy. His winning poster title was Accretion and Storage of Phosphorus in Recently Accreted Soils (RAS) in the Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs) of the Everglades Basin, and it if focused largely on the reduction of phosphorus loads in the Everglades Protection Area. Ishii is a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Florida, and her poster titled Behavior of Reoccurring PARAFAC Components in Fluorescent Dissolved Organic Matter in Natural and Engineered Systems: A Critical Review was the only of the three winners entered in the Water Treatment and Aquatic Chemistry category. Ishii’s poster focuses on how fluorescence spectroscopy in combination with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) has shown great promise for monitoring dissolved organic material(DOM) in natural and engineered systems. Rodriguez is a doctoral student in the School of Natural Resources and Environment. His poster was in the category of Nutrient Dynamics and Enrichment Impacts in Aquatic Ecosystems, titled Linkages Between Pollutants and Physiological Processes in Fish Exposed to Urban Effluents. This poster demonstrated how fish can be used as indicators of the amount of toxic pollution in a water body because fish are helpful when determining what levels of water pollution will be toxic for other vertebrates.
