Statistical Modeling of Chemotaxonomic and Water Quality Data in the Everglades
Goals and Objectives

This work focused on the development of statistical relationships between the composition of algae in the Everglades, and measurements of water chemistry. The principal goal was to determine if algal pigment assays, which can easily be deployed and can integrate water chemistry for extended periods of time (i.e., vs. a snapshot provided by a grab sample), can be used to assess water quality. While several interesting associations were observed, the confounding effects of season, water depth and natural variability ultimately weakened the associations between algal pigments and chemistry to the point where they were not tenable for water quality monitoring.
