WSC-Category 2 Collaborative: Robust decision-making for South Florida water resources by ecosystem service valuation, hydro-economic optimization, and conflict resolution modeling
Goals and Objectives
 
Societies such as those in south Florida, whose options for managing public water resources are limited by climatic, physical or legal constraints, require integrated assessment to promote cooperative decision-making under uncertain hydro-climatic conditions and socio-economic futures. This sub-award is part of the South Florida Water, Sustainability, and Climate Project coordinated by PI Dr. Michael Sukop from Florida International University and supported by NSF/USDA NIFA. The specific activities of the sub-award will contribute to the parameterization of agricultural water demand, evaluating future demand scenarios, and developing estimates of unregulated flows in support of the hydro-economic modeling efforts contributing to the broader project objectives. The overall objectives of the collaborative project are:

1) To develop a hydro-economic model for south Florida that optimizes water management operations and infrastructure changes based on a broad-sector economic model of the value of water use.
2) To develop new information on the economic value of ecosystem services and ecological functioning and incorporate it into model formulations.
3) To investigate potential hydrologic, ecological, and economic impacts of management schemes that are designed to increase the resilience of the system to climate variability, climate change and SLR.
4) In an experimental setting, utilize stakeholder participation to improve understanding of the roles of cognitive and perceptual biases in risk assessment and decision-making in scenario evaluations.
5) With agency and stakeholder involvement, collaboratively develop recommendations for adaptive water management plans that optimize economic productivity and the value of ecosystem services, and which foster sustained public support in south Florida.
