Panel Description and Panelists
Increasing awareness of water scarcity and growing concerns about water quality degradation have motivated an ongoing social, economic, and political battle over the development and implementation of water policy. Solutions to these complex problems are often framed in terms of strong, science-backed policy, implemented by a motivated cadre of committed public servants, with the assistance of highly-skilled professional consultants. In the worst cases, however, policymakers and agency representatives are accused of ignoring science, academics are characterized as disconnected from the “real world” problems, and consultants are perceived to be opportunistically cashing in on the conflict and confusion. In this session, we explore the opportunities for improved collaboration between academia, agencies, and private consulting firms to improve the development and implementation of water quantity and quality policies and regulation. Presenters will share examples of successful collaborative projects with a focus on what made the collaboration/partnership successful and will be followed by a panel Q&A session.
